Meet Montin - the forest fire dog

Meet Montin - the forest fire dog
At Elmia Wood 2025, you had the chance to meet Montin, who is something as exclusive as one of the world's only six certified forest fire dogs.

- Once the emergency services have completed their rescue operation in the event of a forest fire, the ground must be extinguished and monitored. Searching for embers in the ground is an extensive and costly endeavour, and the responsibility for monitoring is that of the landowner. With the help of Mr Montin and our other teams, we can quickly detect hot spots, making the work much more efficient. We can help in an operation where we can prevent the spread of the fire and thus reduce costs, important natural values and emotional values," says Malin Kyllesjö.

Montin and his mum Malin Kyllesjö are one of Sweden's six certified forest fire dog teams.

Word of the forest fire dogs has started to spread. And now the assignments are also coming in when the emergency services are still working.
- This shows that the benefits of our work are great. We come in at an earlier stage, before the fire is handed over to the landowner. If our dogs do the job, the emergency services can reduce the risk of having to go back to a flared-up fire.
Put simply, the dog is trained to sniff out embers underground, in stumps and roots, and to indicate to the handler where there may be smouldering embers.
- ‘The aim is to have at least one trained team in each county in the long term,’ says Malin.

Rat hunting with ferret and dog

Mona Ghalayaini is also at the same stand. She brings not only her dogs but also a cage of ferrets?
- We have developed a way to hunt rats with ferrets and dogs. Maybe it's a farm, a warehouse, a shop or a housing association that has a rat problem. Then we use ferrets and dogs to kill the rats, instead of traps or poison. This way we get to the bottom of the problem," says Mona.
"When the ferret is released, it chases the rat to the dog, which kills the rat.
- It couldn't be more natural. We utilise the animals' inherited characteristics. We are the first in Sweden with this concept," says Mona.

At Elmia Wood 2025, Mona Ghalayaini showed how rat hunting with ferret and dog can be done. A concept that they are the first in Sweden with.
