Single shift and multiple use behind award-winning contractor

Multiple use is the key to success for Långåkra Maskinstation, which won the Golden Logger award at SkogsElmia.

“The success is due to our fantastic employees,” says company founder Dan Johansson.

The competition was organised by Skogforsk (the Forestry Research Institute of Sweden) in collaboration with Elmia, and aims to reward contractors who excel as a source of inspiration and role model. That is what a unanimous jury agreed Långåkra has done. The company is based south of the city of Borås in western Sweden.

One feature that was singled out is that the company only has a single shift, which makes personnel recruitment easier.

“We’ve had that since the beginning in 1975,” Dan Johansson says, and justifies it like this:

“More than one shift wears out the machines and reduces the quality of the thinning work and final felling.”

The company’s multiple use character involves working in three areas. As well as doing forest contracting using seven machine groups of its own, Långåkra has a mobile crane and other equipment for working in the construction industry and also has almost 1,000 hectares of its own forest.

“If we don’t have anything else to do there’s always work in our own forest with silviculture and felling,” Johansson says.

The jury’s award justification read partly as follows:

“A fairly unique situation in the industry is that the work is done in a single shift, which facilitates recruitment and increases satisfaction. The management philosophy, wisdom and common sense, has created a financially very strong company whose solvency, profitability and liquidity far exceed the industry average.”
