Volvo Penta unveiled its Stage V engines

In 2019 the European Union’s Stage V emission standards for diesel engines in forest machines will come into force. On the first day of Elmia Wood Volvo Penta presented its version of tomorrow’s engines in the forestry sector. As well as having lower emissions levels they also feature simplicity of maintenance, use and installation.

På Elmia Woods första dag avtäckte Volvo Penta sin version av framtidens motor i skogsbruket.

“We’re seeing increased interest in Volvo’s engines for forest machines – primarily harvesters and chippers,” comments Johan Carlsson, CTO of Volvo Penta. “By launching our Stage V version here today we want to show the industry that we’re a force to be reckoned with in the years to come.”

The diesel engine exhibited at Elmia Wood is an 8 litre and delivers 160-235 kW.

“It’s equipped with a new system for exhaust gas treatment with emissions levels that meet the EU’s Stage V requirements. The engine is powerful even at low revs. That creates productivity and fuel efficiency while at the same time the sound level around the machine is low.”

Carlsson says simplicity has been the guiding principle of the development work:

“It’s simple to install in various types of applications, simple to use and simple to maintain. Among other things, it’s equipped with a system that maintains the engine during operation – that is, while it’s running. The result is minimal stoppage time.”

The engine’s attributes make it particularly suitable for forest machines.

“But it’s also suitable for materials handling in other industries – mining, farming and more. Everywhere you need an engine that has an efficient load response that distributes the power optimally.”

Facts: EU Stage V emission standards:

Nitrogen oxide (NOx): <0.4g/kWh

Diesel particulate matter (PM or DPM): <0.015g/kWh

Particle number (PN): <1 × 1012/kWh
