Dyna-Flo Plus cleaning system

Harvests are not increasing as much as they could. One reason is soil compaction. Combines are heavy machines and are therefore a major cause of this problem.
For each kilo of reduced combine weight, there would be less ground damage.
Designing a higher capacity cleaning shoe to match the combine harvester is nothing new. But the innovation we are speaking of here is based on a new type of design process. New materials – primarily high-tensile steel and aluminium – have been used and a different method has been applied. The number of welds has been minimised by means of smarter moulding and riveting. This new design engineering philosophy has led to a 30 percent weight reduction, which reduces soil compaction and fuel consumption. In addition, having harvester components with fewer welds should also increase the machine’s lifespan and lower the risk of breakdown. Elmia Innovation Award Gold 2016 is therefore awarded to John Deere Sverige AB for the Dyna-Flo Plus cleaning system.

GoHarvest Premium combine simulator

Combine harvesting is a complex task in which the operator must adapt the machine’s settings under great time pressure to meet constantly changing weather and crop conditions. The operator reaches the optimum skill level after the harvesting has been completed. Eleven months later, the operator’s memory has faded.
The first harvesting days therefore become practice sessions with a risk of reduced capacity and higher losses.
The GoHarvest Premium combine simulator gives an operator the pre-harvest opportunity to train in lifelike conditions to adjust and manoeuvre the machine in a variety of situations. Unlike previous simulators, the vehicle’s computer interacts with both the operator’s controls and the harvesting environment being shown.

Just as in real life, the system reacts to the operator’s actions. If the operator increases the forward velocity, spillage increases. Simulator training prior to harvest can increase threshing capacity, reduce harvest losses and help make the operator’s work less stressful. Elmia Innovation Award Gold 2016 is therefore awarded to Svenska John Deere AB for the GoHarvest Premium combine simulator.

Moocall Ltd

Moocall

If help can be given sooner when there is a complicated calving, there is a positive effect on animal welfare. In suckler cow production, calf survival is also of critical economic importance. Aids to facilitate the monitoring of cows and heifers that about to calve are of interest. Not least, aids are needed in the evenings and overnight when the cow barn is not manned.
A sensor mounted on the animal’s tail gathers data about the tail’s movement patterns. These can predict when a cow is most likely to calve. When the signals indicate a certain level of intensity, a text message is sent to a mobile phone. This system is good for animal welfare and also improves the farmer’s work environment because he/she can make fewer inspection rounds in the barn and can still feel sure not to miss cows that will calve. This saves work time and makes it possible to implement measures at the right time. Elmia Innovation Award Gold 2016 is therefore awarded to Moocall Ltd for Moocall.

EZ Ballast

Farmers want to have a lighter or heavier tractor depending on the work they need it for. Varying the weight of tractors by hanging weights on them is a classic method. For example, there are rear weights, wheel weights and front weights.
What we see in this example is something fundamentally new. It is a weight in the form of an underbody frame that is hydraulically attached and detached. This simplifies the weight changing process so that the farmer can adjust the weight more often for various tasks. The weight changes are made while retaining the weight distribution on the tractor. The concept can probably also lead to the increased use of smaller tractors. Elmia Innovation Award Gold 2016 is therefore awarded to Svenska John Deere AB for EZ Ballast.

John Deere Stone Detection

Machines are becoming ever larger and thereby lock in more and more of the farmer’s capital. It is therefore increasingly important to minimise breakdowns and downtime. In the case of self-propelled forage harvesters, stones and other foreign objects that accompany the material into the machine can cause severe damage. There are systems on the market that can detect stones and other foreign objects, but in this product, developers have used new technology and its placement to create a system that reacts faster and is more reliable. This gives the machine effective and reliable protection but by extension it also has an impact on feed quality. Elmia Innovation Award Silver 2016 is therefore awarded to Svenska John Deere AB for its stone detection system John Deere Stone Detection.

LogMaster

Modern tractors’ data systems hold a lot of data that are not currently being fully exploited. With this product a tool has been developed that simply and automatically combines data collection with recording and classifying measures taken at the field level.

The product enables automatic logging of such data as the machine’s position, time taken, fuel consumption and machine status. The data are recorded and can be linked to a specific shift without the operator having to do anything. By using information from the crop cultivation programme, measures and production costs can be followed up at the field, farm, machine or crop level. The product’s simplicity and its potential to offer greater efficiency and fuel savings are positive for the farmer and the environment. Elmia Innovation Award Silver 2016 is therefore awarded to Dataväxt AB for LogMaster.

Kverneland 3336 MT

Rear-mounted mowing units are important, not least for smaller farms. The suspension in these machines is central to their function. Until now, more sophisticated suspension has with a few exceptions existed only in front-mounted units. It is also important to adjust the machine sidewise to reduce overlap. By developing new principles for suspension on rear-mounted mowing units, not only in the actual arm but also locally at its tip, greater flexibility can be created, leading to better results. The suspension solution we see in this example is a new implementation compared to previous rear-mounted mowing units. The concept also allows the operator to hydraulically make fine sidewise adjustments to the unit from the cab during operation, and the suspension out on the unit then responds in an efficient way. Elmia Innovation Award Silver 2016 is therefore awarded to Kverneland Group Sverige AB for its 3336 MT mowing unit.

Feed Pusher FPM300

Particularly in barns med automatic milking it is of interest to increase traffic to the milking stations by activating the cows. For example, they can be attracted to the feedline when the feed scraper is operating. Various feed pushers exist on the market. This one is a new version: a stationary, rope-operated feed scraper that is installed as fixed equipment and is powered by a small, energy-efficient electric motor. Pushing the feed forward more frequently can give increased feed intake, reduced feed spillage, more traffic to the robots, greater milk yield, and better animal welfare via an improved nutrition supply – in other words, increased efficiency. Low-ranking cows can more easily access the feedline when “new” feed is regularly pushed forward. Elmia Innovation Award Silver 2016 is therefore awarded to DeLaval for its Feed Pusher FPM300.

Welger CB

The cost of not harvesting a forage crop at the right time is high. Solutions that increase the harvesting capacity while maintaining the same crop quality can therefore have good profitability. One such solution is continuously operating balers. These tie and drop the finished bale without the operator having to stop the machine. This method can greatly increase harvesting capacity. The Welger CB is a flex chamber press that – unlike previous solutions – works without the aid of a separate prechamber. The machine presses, ties and drops the bale without the operator having to stop the tractor. This method enables the operator to make the most of good weather to harvest more bales of the right quality. It also reduces the tractor operator’s work stress. Elmia Innovation Award Silver 2016 is therefore awarded to Lely Nordic A/S for its Welger CB.

One such solution is continuously operating balers. These tie and drop the finished bale without the operator having to stop the machine. This method can greatly increase harvesting capacity. The Kverneland/Vicon Fastbale is a non-stop baler-wrapper combination that – unlike previous solutions – works with fixed chambers. The machine presses, ties, plastic wraps and drops the bale without the operator having to stop the tractor. This method enables the operator to make the most of good weather to harvest more bales of the right quality. It also reduces the tractor operator’s work stress. Elmia Innovation Award Silver 2016 is therefore awarded to Kverneland Group Sverige AB for the Kverneland/Vicon Fastbale.

SASC, Svea Animal Safe Control

To ensure that animals are not hurt while the manure scrapers are operating, the scrapers are supposed to stop when they meet an obstacle, which could be a hoof or an animal that is lying in the way. A traditional animal safe system involves setting a fixed maximum level for how high the pressure (resistance) can be.

This means that on many occasions there is a lot of “surplus power” before the maximum pressure is reached in order to deal with pressure that can occur “naturally” such as from cold hydraulic oil, a lot of manure, etc. The difference with this system is that it continually monitors and analyses the variations in the hydraulic pressure. A rapid increase in pressure within a short period of time is an indication that there is an obstacle. Mathematical terminology is applied to analyse the hydraulic pressure’s derivatives rather than the pressure itself. The system “learns” what pressure shocks from the hydraulic oil directional valve look like and when they will occur. It can thereby distinguish them from actual obstacles. The system uses a new technology and can create better animal welfare by reducing the risk of injury. Elmia Innovation Award Silver 2016 is therefore awarded to Rotage Agri AB for Svea Animal Safe Control (SASC).
